My grandmother would tell me, “If you are not going to do it right, just go play and I will do it myself!” Whether picking tomatoes or removing the leaves from the property hedgerows, when you are 12 years old it’s hard to do something when you really dislike doing it.

Have you ever had to force yourself to do something you really didn’t like to do? We all have.

I asked my dental hygienist “when do you think patients brush their teeth most thoroughly?” She replied “the morning of their dental appointment.” One cannot remove six months of plaque buildup in one vigorous brushing. It takes an intentional effort every day to keep those pearly whites in tip-top shape.

It’s the same with our leadership skills. Our leadership skills needs to grow every day, not in one day. Be intentional about learning something new every day. Small changes made every day often bring great rewards. Set aside 15 minutes every day to read. Learning is always an inside job.
